SEATTLE: Booking Holdings is placing a $100 million bet on a simple premise: travelers don’t need another chatbot. They need an agent that actually manages the trip.
The online travel giant unveiled Vayo on Wednesday, a Seattle-based startup launching in private beta with a waitlist now open. The company plans to invest up to $100 million in the venture, contingent on product progress and market conditions.
Highlights:
- What it does: Vayo connects to your email inbox, pulls in flight, hotel, and restaurant confirmations, then monitors everything for price drops, schedule changes, and itinerary conflicts.
- Who’s behind it: CEO Mike Fridgen, a Seattle travel veteran who previously led Madrona Venture Labs and worked on Expedia’s founding vacation-package team.
- The pitch: Vayo works across any booking source, including Expedia and direct airline reservations, not just Booking Holdings brands.
Built for trips, not tasks
Vayo’s core thesis is that general-purpose AI assistants like ChatGPT can answer travel questions but can’t hold an entire trip together. Vayo ingests existing bookings from your inbox, builds a unified itinerary, and then keeps working, flagging when a delayed flight puts your dinner reservation at risk, or when a sold-out hotel suddenly has an opening.
The startup calls the mental load of managing all this the “planning tax.” Its target user is the high-frequency leisure traveler who takes multiple trips a year, often plans for family, and currently relies on spreadsheets or a mess of browser tabs.
A portfolio approach to the AI threat
Vayo is Booking Holdings’ second standalone AI startup, following Lola, launched earlier this month by Kayak’s co-founders. The company is hedging its bets: it has AI efforts inside Booking.com, Priceline, Agoda, and Kayak, plus these two independent ventures operating with startup speed.
Fridgen said the arrangement offers the best of both worlds: access to Booking Holdings’ supply and infrastructure, but the freedom to build a consumer product from scratch.
For now, Vayo is free and invite-only. Direct booking, a native app, and collaborative trip planning are planned for the coming months. Whether travelers will trust an AI to manage their vacations remains an open question, but Booking Holdings is spending real money to find out.
